Dan Fogelberg

Relaxing Piano Cover

"Longer" is a song written and recorded by Dan Fogelberg. The song was released by Full Moon Records and Epic Records in 1979 from the album, Phoenix.

Fogelberg wrote the song lounging in a hammock one night while looking up at the stars. He said, "it just seems this song was drifting around the universe, saw me, and decided I'd give it a good home."

Longer spent two weeks at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making it Fogelberg's highest charting hit.

My goal is to always create a super easy piano arrangement that sounds good and is fun to play. I learned "Longer" by Dan Fogelberg from a lead sheet, which is sheet music that just shows the right-hand melody and chord symbols. (see example below)

I improvised the left hand part by using blocked and broken chords, and I played a simple, single-note melody line with my right hand.

Before I knew any chords, it would take me weeks to learn a new song. After I started learning chords, I could learn a new song in less than an hour. I was able to do this because I no longer had to read the music notes for the left hand, (bass clef).

Knowing chords allows me to create my own piano arrangements. Now all I read is the right hand melody on the treble clef.
